Week 3 - Communication is key

We have had our first setback. We knew this would happen, project delays and errors are all parts of taking on a complicated build. This week we have been reminding ourselves that this is a 100% custom home. No one has had practice digging this specific foundation or framing these specific walls. This isn’t a tract home that is just like the home next to it and across the street.

We were informed that when excavating for the crawlspace, the area wasn’t dug deep enough. 12 inches to be exact. Since we already had footer in place, the excavation crew would have to come back and tear out the footers, dig down another 12 inches, reform, and pour the footers at the correct depth.

We are incredibly thankful that the error was caught early and could be fixed before any other work had been completed.

This week also had the excitement of my mom getting to see the progress for the first time. She has been on a pilgrimage to Israel and Jordan. She left the day before the driveway was made.

I was also able to FaceTime with my nephew Noah to show him the project. He had a firm understanding of the space and that the foundation forms would “hold up your basement ceiling.” Pretty impressive for a 7 year old that describe the excavation work as a “pit of doom.”

Shortly after the new footers were poured, a large truck arrived with the forms for the foundation and basement walls. The forms are massive and really put some perspective on the scale of the project. It will be so exciting to possibly have walls in the coming days/weeks.
