The whirlwind

THE MOVE
This is the fourth post in the series describing our move back to Indiana. If you’d like to read the first post in the series, read Leaving Indiana.

When the pandemic hit, our plans quickly took on a new purpose. We said, well, if we are selling this house, it needs a new floor, the moisture in the crawl space needs to be addressed, a fresh coat of paint, and the wallpaper in the entrance has got to go.

Like many homeowners during the pandemic, we started renovating. But we had new energy. This time it felt like we had a chance to invest a lot of time because we were at home all the time.

Elizabeth started applying to several nursing positions in Indiana. The timing was going to be tricky. We needed Elizabeth to secure a job with healthcare benefits because I was self-employed before we could consider moving.

Once we felt the house was getting close and Elizabeth was likely to get a job offer, we invited a realtor to help us decide what needed to be addressed and what could be left “as is.”

Turns out not much was needed. The housing market was red-hot, and could we move out in a month? The realtor opened our eyes. We were going to do this. In a flash, Elizabeth accepted a job offer that would give us weeks, not months, to get everything packed. We really couldn’t “show” the house with boxes everywhere. So we rented a small storage room a few miles down the road.

While packing, we were also trying to communicate love, appreciation, apprehension, and regret to our friends in South Carolina. Yes, we were selling our house and moving back home. There are so many bittersweet memories here; I could never do them justice.

Our friends responded with support and sadness. We miss them all dearly and this is one of the reasons we wanted to write this blog. To help everyone stay invested in our future. To somehow make good on their support and help reveal the next chapter in a way that keeps us connected.
