Let’s Make Another Decision

Building a custom home is a luxury and we are very aware of that fact. My parents are offering some of their land to build our dream home and that is huge. HUGE. #blessed without any sarcasm. They own 47 ish acres and we had our pick of where to build. I have spent years wandering the woods and fields imagining where I would build a house someday and we had our potential build sites down to 3 general locations. Our next major decision would be tough because this is forever where we would call home and would permanently alter the landscape of the property. Not something to be taken lightly.

Neon’s first introduction to SugarField was during the height of Indiana’s mud season. That is the season between winter and false spring, where you sink into the ground if you stand still for too long. It was the perfect day for walking around fields to look at potential building sites and I was very grateful that I didn’t lose my boots to the mud.

A, B, and C. Which one will it be!

Site A

This had always been our first choice. It was straightforward. Easy access to utilities. Site A was close to the creek and would have really nice open views of the field. But it was very open to the neighbor across the road (we love Deb but also didn’t want our headlights shining into her living room!) A huge bonus to Site A would also be our neighbor’s chickens like to cross to the road and we were excited about our potential feathered visitors.

Site B

This was the dream site. Tucked back behind the trees and down a long lane that would afford lots of privacy. Site B would be more complicated for running utilities and building a driveway. It was also the closest to the creek and would still have long views of the fields.

Site C

This site was already a separated parcel. It has long views of the field to the west and maximum sun exposure to the south. We also knew that there was a gas line that stops at my parent's house so it would be the only site that would be able to easily have natural gas, if we decided to go that route.

After taking some time to walk around and dream, we decided that we would go with site C. We decided that the other sites were too close to some of the favorite private areas of the property and we really wanted to preserve those natural areas. Site C already being a separate parcel also made getting the land transferred over to our names much easier.

We had an architect, and a builder, and a building site. Now the decision-making would really get started!
