Leaving Indiana

THE MOVE
This is the first post in a series about us moving back to Indiana. To read these in order, follow the links at the bottom of the post.

May 2013. Elizabeth flew a kite over Sugar Field 10 years before we would build a house on the land. Just weeks before we would decide to move to South Carolina.

Before I can describe our move from Greenville, you have to understand how we got there in the first place.

May 2012. We were living in Lafayette, Indiana. I was interviewing for a remote position at an E-commerce company. I had to tell Liz that if I accepted the position with the startup, we would need to move. Later that afternoon, I intimated to Elizabeth, “If I’m going to accept the new job, we need to move to Michigan.” She responded that it would have to wait until she finished her nursing degree.

2012. Elizabeth’s nursing graduation ceremony.

I accepted the job on the contingency that I would move into the office after Elizabeth graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. After her graduation, we spent weeks looking at apartments in Ann Arbor. “Too expensive to buy a house, and the apartments are ridiculous. Also, it’s freezing.” We digitally scoured areas around the office and could not locate a Goldilocks home. Michigan was just not affordable on my single income.

“Doesn’t your supervisor live in South Carolina?” He did. And in July 2013, we moved to Greenville, South Carolina.
