June 2023

It’s only been a few weeks, and still so many things to talk about: address, permits, stakes in the ground, a pod update, our soon-to-be-unveiled job site camera crew member, and a quick window update.

While we have a lot of milestones, our street address may be the most foundational. Since our parcel of land has never had a building, no postal address has been assigned. As we described in our last update, we can’t get any of the various permits without an address. The post office can’t issue an address without a building or a building permit. So now that we have an address (thanks to the Boone County Building Area Planning Commission), everything else should start to fall like dominos.

Have we broken ground yet? Nearly every time we hear this question, we feel this question even more deeply. A pin light is at the end of this design-heavy tunnel of dreams. We have an address, and our first permit has been issued! The septic permit came through a day after we got word that our address was finalized. The septic permit was the one we had started first. Many of the others were started towards the end of May. The answer is simple: We’ll get on a schedule for someone to break ground as soon as we have our last permit approved. We are betting on the driveway permit taking the longest.

Another massive physical milestone: we have stakes in the ground that our survey subcontractors laid out. That means we now have real physical things in the field that the excavators will use to dig out the foundations. Real things! In our field!

Packing to move from South Carolina happened almost three years ago. This next week, we’ll be opening up our moving Pod and transferring some (hopefully not all) of our belongings into an on-site building. Many friends packed this pod long ago during the height of the pandemic. By unpacking our pod, we can remove one more monthly bill. Perhaps we can also sell some of our belongings as well? The pod has spent the majority of the last 2.5 years in climate-controlled storage in Indianapolis. Can we find the key to the lock? We will find out very soon!

Camera crew member, Susie, will be unveiled soon. Parts of Susie’s equipment have been in rigorous testing conditions. Our camera crew member will be detailed in another post, but many of the photos and time-lapses will come from Susie.

Quick window update: All fixed, tempered, and tilt-turn windows have arrived in a warehouse in Ohio. They will stay there until the job site is ready. For now, Sugar Field is a bit dusty and unsuitable for a household-sized order of windows.
